The oldest of six children, Darien was raised in Santa Clara, CA by a hard-nosed coach/engineer father and a soft-hearted mom. He was indoctrinated as an athlete/competitor at an early age, he played football in college and earned tryouts with a few NFL teams, but serious knee injuries cut short his career. He worked for IBM for 23 years as a manager, systems analyst, auditor, and marketing representative. Upon retiring in 1994 he focused on coaching, sports training, and instructing Shotokan Karate.
Before salvation, his story was one of regret and destruction. With his life as an athlete long over and corporate career winding down, he had become depressed and discouraged. He sought significance in material possessions, sexual immoralities, gambling, drinking, and brawling.
He was divorced, angry, and spiraling out of control. “If God had not sent a man to come alongside me at that time, I am sure I would have ended up killing myself.”
After retiring from IBM Corp., he started ‘As Iron Sharpens Iron Ministry’ in 1994. In 1998, he was named executive director of a teen substance abuse rehabilitation program which led to a full-time calling to ministry. In 2006, he graduated from Phoenix Seminary with a Masters-Divinity in Biblical Leadership. He has been a Pastor at two churches in Scottsdale and is currently a Pastor and Executive Director of Heart to Heart Christian Chaplaincy Program in Scottsdale Arizona.
He is married to Kellie, the love of his life, and has two grown adult children and three grandchildren. Darien loves being with his wife, family, and friends. He is passionate about studying and teaching God’s Word and ministry. He loves to fly-fish, which he tries to do as much as God will allow.
“My life has been filled with high ups and low downs, yet God has always been faithful and shown me great mercies. I love the Lord and am forever grateful to His grace by which He saved a loser like me.”
